Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters/Eastern Virginia Medical School

Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD) and the Department of Pediatrics at Eastern Virginia Medical School have offered a Child Abuse Pediatrics fellowship program since 2003. Our program trains pediatricians to become medical experts knowledgeable in all areas of child abuse and neglect, including physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, and failure to thrive, as well as psychological abuse and neglect. The fellowship provides comprehensive training and experience in clinical assessment, educational presentation skills, and research skills for physicians who will pursue careers as clinicians, educators, or researchers.

The Child Abuse Program at CHKD consists of both medical and mental health components, involving physicians, forensic nurses, social workers, psychologists, and case managers. The program is a fully equipped multidisciplinary facility, with multiple observation/treatment rooms and full capacity for audio- and video-taped forensic interviews. The program has a very active multidisciplinary research team. The Child Abuse Program is committed to medical student and resident education with mandatory and elective pediatric resident rotations for both CHKD and military residents, allowing the child abuse fellow opportunities for one on one teaching and didactic presentations. Fellows are a part of a regional multidisciplinary team process and will testify in court, train law enforcement, social services, and the legal community, and participate in statewide organizations and committees.

Eastern Virginia is a coastal community. It is consistently rated one of the best places to live and raise a family. Want sun and sand? We’ve got that with a couple of world class beaches 20 minutes from the hospital. Want mild winters and four seasons? We’ve got that too -- summer is great but the fall and the spring bring some of the best days at the beach if you are a local. Want something fun to do? There are great restaurants , museums, sporting venues, and festivals to attend. Want easy access to places elsewhere? No problem -- our central location along the East Coast and active international airport make getting from here to wherever you need to go easy.
