We would like to announce the availability of a Pediatric Fellowship Program in Child Abuse and Neglect at the CAARE Diagnostic and Treatment Center, Department of Pediatrics, UC Davis Children’s Hospital in Sacramento, California on July 1, 2006 (with the possibility of starting sooner). The multi-disciplinary CAARE Center was recently ranked by the National Association of Children’s Hospitals as the “biggest and most comprehensive child abuse program” in the United States.
The mission and purpose of the CAARE Center is to provide patient care, teaching, research and prevention initiatives on behalf of abused and neglected children. Each month, the CAARE Center performs an average of 200 medical evaluations of children referred by Children’s Protective Services (CPS) and law enforcement agencies. These include medical evidentiary exams for evaluation of child sexual and physical abuse, child protective custody clearance exams for all children prior to placement in foster care, and comprehensive medical exams for foster children after placement. The CAARE Center is on the cutting edge of technology and is implementing a telemedicine program that provides medical consultation for medical/evidentiary exams in rural counties and urban areas. Telemedicine agreements are operating at three sites in Northern California. Mental health services are an important component at the CAARE Center. Over 400 children per month receive individual, Parent-Child Interaction (PCIT) Therapy, group and family therapy. The Center also has an Infant Mental Health program providing clinical services and mentoring to eight community based home-visiting programs. Psychiatric services are available at the Center by a full-time child psychiatrist. The Center has two statewide training programs. The California Medical Training Center (CMTC), established by state law, provides training to physicians and nurses throughout California on how to perform quality medical evidentiary examinations for victims of child sexual abuse, child physical abuse and neglect, sexual assault, domestic violence, and elder and dependent adult abuse. The PCIT Training Center has trained over 50 agencies in California, nationally, and internationally in Hong Kong and Australia. We also have an APA-approved psychology-training program and state university approved social workers training program.
