New York Medical College/Westchester Institute For Human Development

This three year forensic pediatrics fellowship curriculum was designed after the model curriculum proposed by Starling, Sirotnak, & Jenny (Child Maltreatment 2000;5:58-62) with an emphasis on child abuse and neglect research and will include a Masters Degree in Public Health from the New York Medical College.

The overall objective of the fellowship is to produce an academic forensic pediatrician who will be proficient in the clinical, research, prevention and educational aspects of physical abuse, sexual abuse, medical neglect, psychological abuse and neglect, and factitious illness by proxy.

The inpatient component will be through the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center, which serves a population of more than 3.5 million people in the seven-county Hudson Valley region, northern New Jersey and lower Connecticut.  The outpatient component will be through the Children’s Advocacy Center of the Westchester Institute for Human Development, which provides forensic medical and psychological services to most of the seven-county Hudson Valley region.  Further, the fellow will engage in a variety of off-site training experiences with the full array of allied professional activities related to child abuse, including: mental health assessment and therapy; child protection services; child fatality review; forensic autopsy; criminal and civil prosecution of child abuse; legislative advocacy; as well as the variety of medical sub-specialists through the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital.

It is anticipated that fellowship is funded in part through a New York State “ECRIP” (Empire Clinical Research Investigator Program) grant.  As part of the research component, the fellow will complete all requirements for the Masters Degree in Public Health at the New York Medical College School of Public Health.

Qualifications:  Given the geographical restrictions with the ECRIP funding, all applicants must reside in the state of New York at the time of application and during the three years of fellowship.  Applicants should be board-certified in Pediatrics, or board-eligible if within two years of completion of residency.
