The Department of Pediatrics at Washington University Medical School and St. Louis Children’s Hospital announces the availability of a two year fellowship training program for a BC/BE pediatrician in the assessment and care of children suspected of being victims of child maltreatment. The program offers the fellow comprehensive training and experience in clinical assessment, research and advocacy skills. Our Child Protection Program in addition to the present fellow has five full time child protection social workers, a pediatric nurse practitioner, two part time pediatric nurse practitioners, and a pediatrician serving as medical director of the program. Our facility provides us with a custom designed interview room and examination room with the latest equipment for audio and video documentation. First year pediatric residents and fourth year medical students participate in a Child Protection Program rotation allowing the child protection fellow opportunities for problem based teaching and didactic presentations. The fellow is provided opportunities to interact and spend elective time with pediatric sub specialists and governmental agencies (judicial, police, child protection agency, child fatality review panel) involved in the multidisciplinary response to child maltreatment. Included in the fellowship program are evening classes on topics such as research design, biostatistics and epidemiology.
