The fellowship program involves clinical experience in two outpatient child abuse programs. One program, the Child Abuse Referral and Evaluation (CARE) Program, is a referral service for four counties, providing medical evaluations for approximately 300 children per year who are victims of child abuse. The site is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and video monitoring systems.
The ENHANCE program is a unique program offering primary care to children who are entering foster care in Onondaga county (over 2000 patient visits per year). Most of the children evaluated in this program have multiple medical, social, and emotional problems. Child development specialists, psychiatrists, county social workers, and medical professionals work together on every case.
In patient work involves coverage of two hospitals affiliated with the SUNY Health Service Center medical school. This includes two patient services and a pediatric intensive care unit for consultation on abuse cases. Community and hospital committees for child abuse issues are well organized (child death review teams, hospital quality management committees, etc.) Research in child abuse issues is an integral part of the program. A large database for both outpatient programs is available for pilot and retrospective studies. Institutional support for research is available.
Funding for this program has not been consistent. Please e-mail the program for more information.
