University of Oklahoma College of Medicine The Department of Pediatrics at University of Oklahoma College of Medicine – Tulsa offers a 1-2 year academic fellowship in Child Abuse and Neglect. The fellowship is located at the Children’s Justice Center, a multidisciplinary site housing a Child Advocacy Center, prosecutors, detectives, child welfare investigators, and mental health support in addition to the medical team. The fellow will join 2 pediatricians, a nurse practitioner, and the chair of the department who are all experts in the field and who will guide the fellow’s education. The fellow will learn appropriate, evidence-based medical evaluation of all aspects of child abuse, including sexual and physical abuse as well as neglect and factitious disorder by proxy. Written and photodocumentation, communication with other disciplines, and court testimony will all be emphasized. The fellow will also gain experience teaching the medical aspects of child abuse to medical and non-medical professionals. In addition to the disciplines represented at the Justice Center, the fellow will have the opportunity to work with forensic pathologists, domestic violence professionals, local prevention and treatment programs, and a highly functioning SANE program. Opportunities for research are present, with the assistance of a dedicated research program within the department. In addition to the approximately 1200 children seen each year from all over eastern Oklahoma, the fellow will have the opportunity to remain active in primary care pediatrics through the general clinic or the inpatient wards at a growing children’s hospital within a larger community hospital. It is anticipated that graduates of the fellowship will be eligible for possible future subspecialty board certification and obtaining an academic position as a child abuse expert. Contact: |
