UTHSCSA and Christus Santa Rosa Children’s hospital have established a 3-year fellowship in child abuse pediatrics for BE/BC pediatricians.  The goals of the fellowship are to train pediatricians how to conduct comprehensive medical evaluations of children and adolescents who are suspected victims of physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological abuse, factitious disorder by proxy or neglect, provide consultation to multidisciplinary agencies and health care professionals through chart and photographic review, and participate in multidisciplinary case staffings, child fatality reviews, scholarly activities, and testimony.   Scholarly activities will include research, review and discussion of published research, teaching, and presenting to medical and non-medical audiences.  Fellows will work with 4 programs: Center for Miracles (evaluation of non-emergent injuries and conditions for suspected physical abuse and neglect, siblings of seriously injured children, and outpatient follow-up for suspected victims of serious physical abuse or neglect), Childsafe (a Children’s Advocacy Center for evaluations of children who are suspected victims of non-acute sexual abuse), SANE program (evaluation of suspected sexual assault and photo-documentation of acute injuries in suspected victims of physical abuse), and Child Protective Service (weekly staffings held at the regional building); in addition, there are in-patient consultations at Christus Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital and University Hospital.
