Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters

Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD) and the Department of Pediatrics at Eastern Virginia Medical School offer a three year fellowship training program for a board certified or board eligible pediatrician in child abuse pediatrics. The object of the program is to train pediatricians to become medical experts knowledgeable in all areas of child abuse and neglect, including physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, as well as psychological abuse and neglect. The fellowship provides comprehensive training and experience in clinical assessment, educational presentation skills, and research skills for physicians who will pursue careers in academic settings as clinicians, researchers, and educators.

The Child Abuse Program at CHKD consists of both medical and mental health components, involving physicians, forensic nurses, social workers, psychologists, and case managers. The program is a fully equipped multidisciplinary facility, with multiple observation/treatment rooms and full capacity for audio- and video-taped forensic interviews. The program has a very active multidisciplinary research team. The Child Abuse Program is committed to medical student and resident education with mandatory and elective pediatric resident rotations, allowing the child abuse fellow opportunities for one on one teaching and didactic presentations. Fellows are a part of a regional multidisciplinary team process and will testify in court, train law enforcement, social services, and the legal community, and participate in statewide organizations and committees.
