Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

Safe Place: The Center for Child Protection at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia offers a three year academic fellowship in Child Abuse Pediatrics.  Safe Place is one of the country’s leading centers for the care of abused and neglected children.  Led by Dr. Cindy Christian, a national expert on abused and neglected children and a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Committee on Child Abuse and Neglect, the child protection team has one of the busiest services in the country, both in the outpatient and inpatient arenas.  At the same time, our faculty is nationally regarded for leading studies on the clinical epidemiology of child abuse, as well as community-based and health services research that has informed the policies and practices for maltreated children residing in the child welfare system.
The three-year fellowship will offer the trainee an opportunity to hone both clinical and research skills in a setting that offers the highest degree of mentorship.  The first year of fellowship is primarily clinical, with the responsibilities directed at caring for a busy child abuse service in the inpatient and outpatient arenas, and working as a part of the multidisciplinary child protection system.  The second and third year will provide the fellow the opportunity to receive graduate training in epidemiology and health policy at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, protected time for developing and completing research projects with extensive opportunities to access resources across the entire Penn community, and opportunities to take increasing leadership roles on the child protection team.
