New York Medical College Department of Pediatrics, Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center, Westchester Institute for Human Development

The Child Abuse Pediatrics Fellowship Program at New York Medical College is an ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) approved program with a variety of clinical, research, academic, and multi-disciplinary team experiences. The overall objective of the fellowship program is to produce an academic pediatrician proficient in the field of child abuse pediatrics. The trained child abuse pediatrician will be proficient in the clinical, research, prevention, and teaching aspects of physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological abuse and neglect. The parent program for the fellowship is the Westchester Medical Center/New York Medical College Pediatrics Residency Program with a primary clinical site through the Children’s Advocacy Center at the Westchester Institute for Human Development.

The program’s primary outpatient clinical site is the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) at the Westchester Institute for Human Development (WIHD). This is an NCA accredited CAC with a state certified multi-disciplinary team. There are a host of community, academic, research and advocacy activities at the program, and the fellow will participate in the Westchester County Child Fatality Review team.  The primary inpatient site for the program is The Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital (MFCH) at the Westchester Medical Center - the region’s only Pediatric Trauma Center, Burn Unit and advanced level Emergency Department with over 20,000 children treated each year from the entire Hudson Valley area and New York City. The fellows learn to evaluate and manage the most serious forms of child abuse in this setting – including abusive head trauma, fractures, unexpected child fatalities, and sexual abuse.

During the three year fellowship program the fellow will engage in a variety of off-site training experiences with the full array of allied professional activities related to child abuse:
