Duke University Medical Center through the Department of Pediatrics and Duke Hospital  offers a 3-year ACGME Accredited Fellowship Program in Child Abuse and Neglect designed for Board Certified or Board Eligible Pediatricians. The Fellowship Program was developed in 2002 as an integral part of the DUMC inpatient Child Abuse and Neglect Consult Team and the outpatient Child Abuse and Neglect Medical Evaluation Clinic (CANMEC).  The Fellowship is designed to provide comprehensive clinical and academic training in all aspects of child abuse and neglect including multidisciplinary forensic evaluations for concerns of physical maltreatment, sexual maltreatment, emotional maltreatment, neglect and dependency as well child abuse prevention and foster care medical home services.  Fellows will be prepared to develop evidence-based expert medical opinions for the purpose of diagnosis, treatment and recommendations. Training experiences include outpatient medical evaluations for suspected maltreatment, inpatient child maltreatment consultations, training in forensic based interviewing techniques, hospital-based rotations with Pediatric Radiology, Neuro-Radiology, Neurosurgery and the UNC Burn Unit. Community trainings include the local Child Protective Services, Law Enforcement, Guardian ad Litem programs, community mental health providers, as well as training in preparation for expert medical testimony in District and Superior Court. Fellows will benefit from the outstanding and comprehensive research support and opportunities offered through Duke University Medical Center, as well through collaborations with the University of North Carolina, the Center for Child and Family Health-NC, NC Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and community agencies.  Open positions vary depending on funding cycle, please contact us for updated information.
