This Pre-Conference is an intermedi
ate medical/advanced investigator training on the aspects of abusive head t
rauma (AHT). We will include diagnosis and treatment of children with suspe
cted AHT, radiological aspects of the condition and the common controversie
s and court defense tactics. The evidence base for the diagnosis of AHT wil
l be provided. The multidisciplinary presenters will convene for a final qu
estion and answer panel to discuss cases and controversies. In addition, ti
me will be dedicated to describing prevention efforts for child abuse in ge
neral and AHT in particular. After completion of this training, healthcare
providers and investigators will have an understanding of the mechanisms, t
reatment and controversies surrounding abusive head trauma.

We Can Do Better: Improving the Healthcare Response to Child Sexual
Exploitation (and Child Forced Labor)
This full-day wo
rkshop will take a pragmatic approach to developing an effective and effici
ent individual and organizational response to suspected sexual exploitation
of children (CSE). Because forced labor and labor trafficking may also in
volve sexual exploitation, these forms of abuse will be incorporated into t
he workshop content. We will discuss core competencies for individual heal
th professionals as well as their healthcare organizations, using case scen
arios, large and small group discussions and didactic presentations. Traum
a-informed strategies, cultural responsiveness and rights-based care will b
e emphasized. Attention will be given to practical steps to service improv
ement such as development of CSE/child trafficking protocols, organizationa
l assessment tools and use of core competencies on human trafficking.
