Martin A. Finkel, DO

Martin A. Finkel, DO, Professor of Pediatrics at the UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine, is the 2012 recipient of The Ray E. Helfer Award. The award is presented annually to a physician who has made outstanding contributions to the field of Child Abuse Pediatrics. Dr. Finkel was cited for his longstanding dedication to teaching, research and clinical care. He is co-director and founder of the Child Abuse Research, Education & Service Institute which provides medical and mental health services for children and their families. He is an internationally recognized authority on the medical evaluation and treatment of children who have been sexually abused. He has written approximately 40 scientific publications and some 20 book chapters. The third edition of his book Medical Evaluation of Child Sexual Abuse: a Practical Guide (2009) is a reference work for many national and international physicians; a Chinese translation was published in 2010. He has been an invited speaker to many national and international conferences and has hosted physicians from Australia, Hungary, Israel and the Netherlands to share his knowledge and methods.
