Seattle Children’s Hospital and University of Washington School of Medicine offers an ACGME-accredited 3-year fellowship in child abuse pediatrics. The fellowship is part of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Hospital, one of the top 10 children's hospitals in the United States and the major pediatric referral center in our four-state region – Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WAMI). Fellows will evaluate patients when there is a concern physical abuse, sexual abuse, medical abuse, psychological abuse, physical neglect, medical neglect, or other types of neglect. All aspects of child maltreatment are part of the program. Our fellows work with other professionals in related fields including child protective services, law enforcement, forensic interviewers, and mental health treatment providers. The program is actively involved in weekly multidisciplinary team meeting, regional child abuse networks, child death review, and activities of the King County Medical Examiners office. The extensive academic faculty in both general pediatrics and pediatric sub-specialties provides comprehensive clinical educational and research opportunities. In addition, the program provides a strong didactic curriculum and weekly teaching and case conference. In addition to education in research methods and mentoring in research, fellows have the option of obtaining a masters degree in public health or health administration at the University of Washington School of Public Health. These degrees are funded by the program. Fellows graduating from our program are well prepared to become leaders Child Abuse Pediatrics in children’s hospitals, academic institutions, and/or government and community programs.
