Comprehensive Training From The Ray E. Helfer Society

Held in Conjunction With The Chadwick Center's Annual San Diego International Conference on Family and Child Maltreatment

This is a hybrid meeting, which means you can attend in person or virtually. However, you cannot attend both in person and virtually.

Saturday, January 22, 1 - 5 p.m. and continuing Sunday, January 23, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (Pacific Time)
Abusive Head Trauma - Diagnosis, Treatment and Common Controversies

This Pre-Conference is an intermediate medical/advanced investigator training on the aspects of abusive head trauma (AHT). We will include diagnosis and treatment of children with suspected AHT, radiological aspects of the condition and the common controversies and court defense tactics. The evidence base for the diagnosis of AHT will be provided. The multidisciplinary presenters will convene for a final question and answer panel to discuss cases and controversies. In addition, time will be dedicated to describing prevention efforts for child abuse in general and AHT in particular. After completion of this training, healthcare providers and investigators will have an understanding of the mechanisms, treatment and controversies surrounding abusive head trauma.

Our presenters for this program are: Mary Case, MD; Arabinda Kumar Choudhary, MD, MRCP, FRCE, FACHE, MBA; Justin Fitzsimmons, JD; Christopher Greeley, MD, MS, FAAP; Suzanne Haney, MD, FAAP; and Jeanette Pérez-Rosselló, MD.

Saturday, January 22, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (Pacific Time)
Introduction to the Medical Evaluation of Child Physical Abuse

This institute is specifically for healthcare providers and others who have NOT completed a child abuse pediatrics fellowship and have had little training on the evaluation of the physically abused child. After completion of this training, participants will have an understanding of how to approach a physical abuse evaluation, how to communicate effectively with families and community partners, as well as how to communicate findings in a court setting. Register directly with the organization. Click here to register directly with The Ray E. Helfer Society.

Our presenters for this program are: Kristine Fortin, MD, FAAP; Sundes Kazmir, MD; and Mary Clyde Pierce, MD, FAAP.

Sunday, January 23, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (Pacific Time)
We Can Do Better: Improving the Healthcare Response to Child Sexual Exploitation (and Child Forced Labor)

This full-day workshop will take a pragmatic approach to developing an effective and efficient individual and organizational response to suspected sexual exploitation of children (CSE).  Because forced labor and labor trafficking may also involve sexual exploitation, these forms of abuse will be incorporated into the workshop content.  We will discuss core competencies for individual health professionals as well as their healthcare organizations, using case scenarios, large and small group discussions and didactic presentations.  Trauma-informed strategies, cultural responsiveness and rights-based care will be emphasized.  Attention will be given to practical steps to service improvement such as development of CSE/child trafficking protocols, organizational assessment tools and use of core competencies on human trafficking.

Our presenters for this program are: Jordan Greenbaum, MD; and Corey Rood, MD, FAAP.
